The Good Old Days - Rare Coins
August 24th, 2008 | by admin |Most of us has heard the phrase, “phony as a 3 dollar bill”, and it is good thing that phrase wasn’t replaced with a ” phony as a 3 cent coin” because if it were then that wouldn’t be correct. You see, after reading the british numismatic journal I found out that in 1851 the United States released a 3 cent coin. The story as to why it was made is as interesting as the coin itself.
In 1851 the coin was proposed, not only because people were clamoring for a small denomination, easy to handle coin, but it was also produced in response to the decrease in the postal rate from 5 cents to 3 cents. That is what I found amazing. The government actually decreasing a price rather than raising it. Ah, the good old days.
