Worm Farming Can be Inexpensive
May 18th, 2008 | by admin |Was reading some posts on a gardening forum the other day and some people were arguing that by the time one buys the materials needed to do worm farming (also known as vericomposting), they would be able to buy the finished compost and have money left over.
Unfortunately, they're falling prey to the modern-day notion that you need to 'buy' everything you need in order to get something done. It's not really necessary to buy anything to start worm farming, with the exception of the starter worms, and it's entirely possible that if you belong to any type of a gardening club or even know some friends or neighbors who garden and compost, that they would be able to provide your first batch of worms for free. Once you have the starter worms, they'll propagate indefinitely. The other materials can all be scrounged. It's not necessary to have a commerical worm compost bin. There are lots of different types of containers that can be used. For bedding, straw, newspaper, and other materials are free or very cheap.
So get out of the mindset that you need to buy everything you need to get started, whether it's worm farming or anything you'd like to do. Apply some creative thinking and you'll probably come up with a good substitute for that expensive commercial gadget!
