UC Berkeley Has Gone To The Worms
July 26th, 2008 | by admin |It started as a student project in 1993 and has grown to a recycling project that processes over 200 tons of food waste each year from the UC Berkeley Campus. In 2005 the group reorganized and split into two organizations, Berkeley Worms and Bay Worms. Bay worms not occupies as site at the former Alameda Naval Air Station and using it's herd of red worms has turned worm composting toilet into a non-profit business venture. With their new location they expect to be able to collect more food and waste products from Alameda County. They sell the worm castings, compost and other worm products to create an income that supports home composting.
